  1. And — a copy has arrived in the wilds of Connecticut!

  2. Ad is up at A&A.

  3. Ordered (delayed due to vacation travels) and eagerly awaited!

    • The physical book (cover design and detail, fonts) finely represents the craftsmanship of the essays. Well done Mr. Simon! I will enjoy rereading this.

  4. I just wanted you to know that your book is in my university library now, and I’ve already notified the professor who teaches our History of Middle Earth class about it. I’m excited you offer a print version so we could get it (since we can’t buy Kindle ebooks as a library). I’m looking forward to reading it when it’s done getting cataloged.

  5. I just bought the Kindle edition – based solely so far on your comments at TPV – and the quality of your prose in the sample.

I’ve gotten so skittish about getting books that turn out to be unreadable once sampled that I rarely do this. I loved Tolkien when TLOTR gobsmacked me in college, many years ago, and admire the man and the writing (though I rarely read fantasy now because of where the genre has moved).

The cover is gorgeous, your aim perfect, and the middlebrow approach just the right tone (if I may call it that). I write mainstream fiction and I’m hoping to publish soon, and I think there will be many tips to pick up here because one of my main concerns is the quality of the writing and the use of the language. I think you may have wider appeal than you realize.

    All the best.

  6. Jeff DuMond says

Hello – I am halfway through this book and I love it. Very well done and right along in the vein of the Tom Shippey books (which are my favorite Tolkien scholarship books). I have read many of them (and I guess you can say I am addicted to find just one more kernel of knowledge about Tolkien and the writing of his great works). Most of the other books I have read have been pretty dry to me and seem to be like reading a textbook at times. You have presented a substantial amount of knowledge and opinions in an entertaining way. I am planning on reading your fiction once I am finished with this book. I just wanted to thank you for writing this book – it stands right along side with the “great elf-friends of old” (i.e – the other great Tolkien scholars like Shippey, Fleiger etc).

    Scincerely,

    Jeff DuMond

    • Thank you kindly! Those may be the kindest words anybody has said about Writing Down the Dragon. I hope you enjoy my other stuff, too.
