An embarrassment of not-riches

First, the news according to Truman: Last night, I did nothing.

This is because I worked during the day; but the Boneless Beast flaps a scornful pseudopod and replies, ‘Details, details.’ At any rate, I am back on the job with Where Angels Die, even if I am getting the work done outside of abnormal business hours.

Meanwhile, a difficulty arises.

When I sell books in June (as I am doing now, thanks to my Loyal Readers and some new faces), Amazon tots up the account at the end of the month and pays net 30 days – that is, at the end of July. If I keep the nose to the grindstone and so forth, I may be all right to pay my bills for August. But my usual source of income has been temporarily cut off, and I find myself with one foot hanging over the yawning chasm of July and nothing to build a bridge with.

In short, I am scrambling for a few bucks to pay the bills.

If anybody wants either ebooks or print books laid out, typeset, and proofread, I am available for such jobs at the most reasonable rates. Wendy S. Delmater of Abyss & Apex (where I serve as Editor-at-Large) can vouch for my skills in these areas; or you can look at any of my own books and judge of my work for yourself. If you know anybody who is looking for such a service, it couldn’t hurt to mention my name. I can be most easily reached by email through the CONTACT link at the top of this page.

And if you haven’t got any work to send my way – though it pains me to ask – if you happened to drop a few bucks in the tip jar by clicking on the Donate button, it would be received with blessings and gratitude.

I want to get Where Angels Die out, and the Superversive collection, and the McStudge book, and resume publishing The Eye of the Maker, all of which my Loyal Readers have asked me to do; I am here to entertain you, and perhaps give you somewhat to think about. But I need to buy the time to do it.

Your support and good wishes are greatly appreciated. Thank you all,

  1. Well, I am in a quandary. I was one of the 3.6 faithful who urged you Mr. Simon to create a tip jar. I have even made use of the jar a couple of times in the past. However ever since then PayPal “came out” (so to speak) in very publicly joining a boycott of North Carolina due to that state’s quite sensible law against men using the bathrooms of little girls. Since that time I have decided to boycott PayPal – turnabout seems very fair in this. Indeed I am quite tempted to make the more permanent step of deleting my PayPal account, but have not done that just yet.

I did purchase the paperback versions of Style is the Rocket and Death Carries a Camcorder, but based on the above I know this may be too little, too late.

If you can email me an address or PO Box I will drop a physical check in the mail. This will help me to preserve my little PayPal boycott. At that point I will have done what I can to encourage you in your work and in keeping a steadfast spirit.

    • Done (as you have seen) and done!

I sympathize with your boycott and respect your principles. If I knew of a good alternative to PayPal, I would switch to it; but at present, as far as I know, there isn’t one.

      • re: switching to an “alternative” – The esteemed Mr. John C. Wright has switched to a service called “Patreon” I believe. I don’t know how difficult that switch was or what trials the web gremlins faced to do so, but perhaps he could let you know?
On a related topic I cancelled my two PayPal accounts. I made sure to call them and politely tell their “customer service” representative exactly why I was cancelling my accounts. She read to me from their apparently McStudge-written script on why they chose to do what they did. I must admit I rudely (she was just doing her job) cut off her spiel and told her that I had no interest in their justifications on why they objected to laws against allowing men into little girls restrooms. What a cathartic phone call!

I would appreciate the same. Casting your bread upon the water of one’s favorite waters is almost not Christian charity at all, because they swiftly pay you back with more books! (I jest. I jest.) Seriously thought, I have the same objection to paypal.

  2. I’d be willing to send a couple of hundred dollars your way in exchange for revision and proofreading services. The text won’t be ready for two o three months, but I would send you the money now.

If you’re interested, please send me an email. If you’re not, it will be a pleasure to make use of the tip jar of the only author whose books I buy sight unseen these days.
